What Is a Tongue Tie?
A tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, occurs when the tissue under your baby’s tongue is tight or restrictive. This can limit tongue movement and affect how your baby feeds.
Why Therapy Before Release Matters
When structure restricts tongue movement, babies develop compensatory patterns that may continue even after the restriction is removed.
Pre-release oral motor therapy strengthens muscles and improves coordination. Starting therapy before the procedure can significantly
improve feeding outcomes afterward.
About Tongue-Tie
Many babies with a tongue-tie have difficulty with breastfeeding or bottle
feeding, including challenges with latch andsucti on. This can impact how efficiently
they transfer milk and may affect weight gain.
What Pre-release Therapy Includes
Sessions focus on improving tongue mobility and strengthening sucking patterns through guided oral motor exercises. Therapy also supports the coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing, which is essential for safe and effective feeding. Positioning and latch
techniques are addressed to optimize feeding, and parents receive hands-on coaching so they feel confident continuing strategies at home.
Signs Your Baby May Benefit
Your baby may benefit from oral motor therapy if feeding feels challenging. Signs
include a shallow latch, clicking sounds during feeds, or prolonged and inefficient
feeding sessions.
Feeding Challenges
Babies may fatigue easily, fall asleep quickly while feeding, or struggle with weight gain. You may also notice gassiness, reflux, or visible frustration during feeds.
Impact on Mothers
For breastfeeding mothers, feeding may be painful or uncomfortable. Many babies with a tongue-tie have difficulty with breastfeeding or bottle feeding, including
challenges with latch and suction.
Benefits Of Starting Before Release
Faster Feeding Improvements
Babies often show faster improvements in
feeding and are less likely to continue using
ineffective patterns. Early support reduces the
risk of ongoing feeding difficulties and helps
parents feel more confident and prepared. It
also supports stronger long-term oral function
as your baby grows.
What To Expect After Release
Continued therapy following a procedure reinforces new tongue movements and helps
your baby avoid returning to old habits. Therapy also supports the healing process and ensures that feeding continues to improve in a
safe and functional way.
