Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory approach to help individuals struggles with reading, spelling and handwriting. This approach benefits students with dyslexia because of the emphasis it places on individualized, structured learning. This approach helps struggling readers learn letters and corresponded sounds. It breaks reading and spelling down into individual skills that relate to letters and sound and sessions build on these skills over time.  The rules and patterns of decoding are explicitly taught in a clear and cohesive manner building from simple to complex.

The Orton Gillingham approach teaches children how to break words into their individual syllables and sounds (this process is called decoding). It also teaches them to break down words verbally intro their individual syllables and sounds (this process is called encoding). Decoding and encoding skills are to help a child achieve reading fluency and automaticity.
